Travel back the roadway of time!

Along much of the National Road beginning in Bridgeport, Ohio, there can be found mile markers which have stood as silent sentinels for travelers, informing them how many miles they must travel to go from one town to another.  The first markers were made of an early concrete-like product which did not weather well, then sandstone, and finally, modern concrete.  Placed on the north side of the Road, they all indicated the distance to Cumberland, Maryland from whence they stood, plus the distances to both the next larger town and the closest smaller burg, perhaps just a crossroads or the location of a tavern.  The smallest towns were identified only by the first initial of their name, as in "E" for Etna.

Our little site is going to take you back to "life in the past lane" as we visit the four counties that make up the eastern Ohio segment of the Road.  Those counties are (from east to west), Belmont, Guernsey, Muskingum and Licking.  These four comprise what many believe to be the most scenic segment of the Road in the Buckeye State.  And if we show favorites among the "Pike towns" those would likely be the smaller places that, to the uneducated eye, seem to have little to recommend them, when, in fact, they're home to much of the early history of Ohio as well as some of the nicest folks you'd ever want to meet!

We'll also take you off the beaten path, point you toward relict sections of both brick and the even earlier concrete paved segments, tell you where to look for well-hidden original stone bridges, each of which pre-dates the battle of the Alamo in Texas, as well as those known to all passersby, and share with you a collection of vintage photographs and post cards, some very rare, that will give you a sense of what the Road used to be, and still is in many cases.

If Route 66 is the "Mother Road", then most certainly this has to be the "Father Road" of our nation - the Road that built America!

But more on that later.  First, let's see how to travel through this site to discover this great treasure of living history that's right in our midst.

The "News" link to the left will take you to an area for updates, news and other links of interest.

The "Ohio Counties" link will allow you to access the vintage and contemporary views of the four counties the National Road passes through from the Ohio River at Bridgeport to the Franklin County line at Reynoldsburg.

Please, return often to find what's new along the "Old Road."
